The constitutions

Las Constituciones UR

The constitutions are the legal symbol of Universidad del Rosario and were written in 1654 by the founder Friar Cristobal de Torres. When Friar Cristobal de Torres entered into a disupte with the members of the Dominican Order over the election of the Colegiales (none of whom were from the Dominican Order), he decided to write constitutions inspired by those of the Colegio Mayor de Salamanca (Nieto Arango, 2013). The constitutions regulate aspects such as the way in which university leaders are elected, the disposition of assets, the participation of students and graduates, the education system, among other matters.

The constitutions were partially modified in 1893, 1930, 1974, 1984 and 1995. For this reason they are considered the most stable legal document in the nation, conserving the founder’s substantial precepts since the 17th century.
